If You Look Like an Immigrant Arizona’s Police Will Stop You
Last Friday, Arizona Republican Governor Jan Brewer signed into law the country’s most unpractical and misguided immigration bill, forcing police officers to arrest anyone on a “reasonable suspicion” of being an undocumented immigrant.
The President, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, and local and federal legislators across the country have criticized the new law as misguided. The immigrant rights, faith, labor and civil rights communities condemned the law and some have called for a boycott.
Arizona’s new law does nothing to fix our flawed immigration laws. Instead, it legalizes racial profiling, promoting fear among immigrants and communities of color in Arizona. On the bright side, thanks to Arizona’s new law, Senate Democrats now want to move quickly on efforts to reform the nation’s broken immigration system. Our country does not benefit from unworkable and oppressive laws. We need real immigration policy solutions that benefit American and immigrant workers.
