Obama Will Address Mayors Later This Month. Will McCain Be On The Golf Course?
The U.S. Conference of Mayors, which is holding its 76th Annual Meeting in Miami from June 20th to June 24th has just announced that Senator Obama will address the body. Yahoo! is reporting that he will speak to the body on June 20th, while a press release I received earlier this afternoon says that he will address the body on June 21st.
This is encouraging. Senator Clinton spoke before the body at its annual meeting in Los Angeles last summer and endorsed its 10-point plan for a renewed federal-urban relationship. Senator Obama will have a chance to highlight his own urban plan that he released several months ago.
Senator McCain has been invited, but so far he seems to prefer the golf course to the city. Indeed, he has been silent on urban issues throughout his campaign thus far.
President Bush, former President Bill Clinton, and former British PM Tony Blair have also been invited.
MayorTV will be at the Conference of Mayors conducting interviews. We have previously interviewed the President of the Conference of Mayors, Trenton Mayor Douglas Palmer, and the organization's vice president, Miami Mayor Manny Diaz. You can find the list of mayors who have RSVP'd to the event here.
