Facing Race: the Conference Lives On

After culling some of the best leaders, framing the issues, and making sure people had a good time developing their plans of action, the Applied Research Center's staff behind the Facing Race Conference this past March took a big breath of relief. Our conference was a success.

More than 600 participants flanked our 50 plus workshops, 3 plenaries and our night of motivational poetry and jazz from legend Eddie Palmieri. For three days in New York, we united the racial justice movement.

This year’s conference also featured an unprecedented amount of documentation. In print and video, we were able to capture most of the action and also, create an online portal where people posted and accessed notes and resources from the workshops, read participant biographies, and left comments.

This online conference made its home at our Facing Race Wiki that I invite everyone to explore.

Many attendants were inspired during the Future of Racial Justice plenary that identified the hot spots of conflict where activists can most make a difference structurally and interpersonally. You can check it all out on our sites.

Log on to ARC's website to get full coverage of the conference and links to RaceWire.org that summarized the three plenaries and other events. Also find photos and video from the Walter Mosley keynote speech and Kaleidoscope, the night of entertainment featuring Eddie Palmieri.

Meanwhile, keep an eye out for information about our next conference in November 2008 in Oakland, California.
