Avon Park Rejects Rabid Immigration Law
Earlier this week I wrote The New Culture War where I dispelled the racist myths driving the immigration debate. In the piece, I wrote about the city of Avon Park whose Mayor Tom Macklin had proposed a law to punish landlords and employers who did business with undocumented immigrants and make English the official language.
In today's blog post, I celebrate a major shift in Avon Park politics. The New York Times reported today that in its authorization vote - the one that counts - which took place yesterday, the city council rejected the measure that it had previously approved in principle, due to the changed vote of Brenda Gray, the Council's only Black member.
