Sara Stuart directs development, communication and marketing, and is a member of the advocacy team at Citizens Union, a good government watchdog organization focused on New York City and State. Through her efforts, Citizens Union has gained greater media coverage and is regularly approached for comment on news and policy stories. In addition, GothamGazette.com, a publication of Citizens Union Foundation, has increased its readership and attracted a growing stream of advertisers. Prior to joining CU, she worked at the Center for Community Alternatives, a social service agency serving people involved in the criminal justice system. At CCA, she raised new support from government and private sources, oversaw the development and dissemination of print and electronic publications as well as increased media coverage of the agency’s work.
From 1985 to 2002, she headed Communication for Change, a not-for-profit organization, working in developing countries to strengthen community development and improve the status of women. To achieve these goals, she formed partnership with local organizations and to train and equip community members and staff to use video for self-representation, organizing and advocacy. Communication for Change projects have enabled poor workers to negotiation effectively with local and national authorities, aided community organizers in mobilizing constituents to hold government leaders accountable, allowed women and men to advocate against the practice of female genital mutilation in their communities and more. Stuart continues to serve on the Communication for Change board of directors.
