Sam J Miller is the organizer of the housing campaign at Picture the Homeless.
Picture the Homeless was founded by two homeless men in the Fall of 1999, who began organizing in response to the Giuliani Administration's brutal policies towards the homeless - policies that were broadly supported by the mainstream media. Our work is based on the principle that in order to end homelessness, people who are homeless must become an organized, effective voice for systemic change, and that the perspectives and demands of homeless people must be included at all levels of decision-making that impact them. Since our founding we have won important changes in areas such as city housing policy, illegal police practices, economic justice, provision of homeless services, and media representation of the homeless. Additionally, our efforts have created space for homeless people, and their agenda, within the broader social justice movement.
